Cyanide by Ella Fields | Review + Release Blitz

Release Date: August 24, 2017 (out now!)

Series: Surface Rust #1
Heartless. Conceited. Shallow.
Three simple words to describe me.

I had everything a girl could ask for, yet nothing I truly needed.
I'd made peace with who I was and the expectations set upon me long ago.
Only to have that peace shattered when a nameless hero rode into my world.

I wasn't allowed to have him.
Too bad I never cared much for the word no.

Because I'd soon learn the hard way that too much self-indulgence could result in incurable consequences.

We were first introduced to Jared in Ella Field's Frayed Silk, however there is no need to read that book to enjoy Cyanide. It will enhance your reading experience though, because Jared's character fascinated me in Frayed Silk. I didn't want to like him in that book, but did and hoped he'd get his own book.

Now, we have Cyanide and it's just as fantastic as Frayed Silk.

Vera, our heroine, is the complete opposite of Jared. She's a wealthy socialite, while Jared was born on the wrong side of the tracks. Vera didn't have the best childhood--while she got everything that she wanted, her mom ran off with her boyfriend when she was very young, her dad was never around, and the butler and the nanny left to take care of her thinks she's a demanding, spoiled brat. The only thing to keep her company are her books.

Adult Vera is an a prickly, sharp-tongued woman. Okay, she's basically a bitch. Usually, I wouldn't like a character like Vera, but since we really got to know her through her first person POV, through flashbacks, and we see first hand her vulnerabilities beneath her attitude, as a reader you understand why she is the way she is and you end up liking her despite her flaws. Jared, on the other hand, is the bad boy on a motorcycle. Literally. He's cocky yet charming and suave. He's still mulling over the events in Frayed Silk, and trying to run his own business.

Jared and Vera met when Jared stopped on the side of the highway to rescue Vera from becoming roadkill. He insisted she get behind him on his motorcycle, and with no other choice Vera lets him take her home. Vera didn't learn of the mysterious guy's name until they ran into each other again at a coffee shop much later. I really enjoyed the dynamics between Vera and Jared--the whole opposites attract thing. The sexual tension was high, and when these two got together, it was explosive. Jared has a dirty mouth like you wouldn't believe. Turn the AC up, but these two are so freakin' hot together!

Cyanide is my second read by Ella Fields and I love her writing style. In the two books I've read by her, she's created really complex and compelling characters who drive the story. She writes twists you don't see coming, and I was reading late into the night because I just had to see what's going to happen next. It was a happy accident when I bought Frayed Silk on a whim, hoping to read a forbidden romance in the same vein as Black Swan Affair by K.L. Kreig (because I was having some weird love triangle/infidelity kick) and it ended up exceeding my expectations, and was able to sign up to get my hands on Cyanide early. I am so excited to read more by Ella Fields and I am definitely auto-buying the next book in her Surface Rust series. Pick up Cyanide! I highly recommend!

He moves to unzip his fly, and I snap into action, stopping him. Biting my lip, I reach down between us and do it myself then tuck my hand inside his black boxer briefs. My eyes never leave his, so I catch every reaction my touch elicits. His nostrils and eyes both flare when my hand finds his velvety length. Rock hard with pre-cum resting at the tip. I swipe my thumb over it, and he visibly shivers. Grinning, I squeeze him gently and start to move my hand up and down, loving the way his breathing turns ragged until he stops me. “Shit, you gotta stop, or this will be over real quick.”

“Oh? What happened to all night?” I taunt.

He leans in to nip my bottom lip, and my panties grow even wetter. “Frost”—he tsks—“this is only round one.”

My breath hitches, but I try not to let any more surprise show and lift my thumb between us to my mouth, sucking his excitement from it and fluttering my lashes.
“Jesus fucking …” His mouth crashes into mine, rough hands tangle into my hair, and I hear the ting of my hair pins as they fall to the counter and floor.
