Q&A with JK Beck, author of When Blood Calls (& GIVEAWAY)

Hello everyone! Today, I am very excited to have paranormal romance author J.K. Beck on our blog to chat with us. Her newest release is a called WHEN BLOOD CALLS, the first book in her new Shadow Keepers series, which comes out on this coming Tuesday, Aug. 31st. Please join me in welcoming her...

Hi J.K.! Please tell us a little about yourself?

J.K. Beck is a deeply mysterious author with a detailed knowledge of all things weird, otherworldly, dark and dangerous. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! (Okay, maybe I'm not sticking so tight. J.K. Beck is a pen name for moi, Julie Kenner, author of a whole buncha books including the urban fantasy demon-hunting soccer mom series--maybe that's SUBurban fantasy?-and the recent Blood Lily Chronicles. And a lot of other books, too, from romance to chicklit!

I've always wanted to write, got there via the strange route of film school to law school to lawyer to writer. But, hey, it worked for me! Now I write full time, live in Central Texas with my husband, two daughters, two cats, and two fish. I homeschool my kids, and am SO excited because we're moving to a brand spanking new house really soon and I'll have more room... which I will NOT fill up with clutter. Really. Really.

LOL, I'm sure you're not a hoarder type. Your top 3 paranormal character crushes from any book or TV or movies?
OMG, number one's easy! Spike. 'Nuff said.

After that, it's harder, but I'll stick Angel on the list, too, but the Angel from ANGEL, who had a bit more personality, imho. And, just b/c I'm feeling contrary, I'm going to go with J.D. Robb's Roarke as the third. (Seriously, he's too perfect. He MUST be paranormal!)

If you could spend a week living in a book and interacting with the characters, what book would you choose? Why?
This one, not so easy--there are just too many to choose from!

Ummm. Harry Potter (do I really have to pick a book?), but only if I don't have to be a Muggle while I'm there, because I think being in that magical world would just be...well...wow. Otherwise, I just don't know. There are too many awesome possibilities. Outlander, maybe, because I think that it would be amazing to see Scotland back then, and Jamie and Claire are such great characters. But I'd need assurance I was only staying a week! I'm definitely a modern kinda girl!

Harry Potter... you are a woman after my own heart! Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Both. I wing it while the idea is percolating (a short "getting the idea" process) and then I almost always write a synopsis. I don't always stick to the synopsis, though. In some books, I stick like glue, referring back constantly. In others, I just dive in and go and I might look at the synop if I hit a hard spot, but more likely I'll call on one of my critique partners to talk it through! I guess the bottom line is that every book is different and organic.

jkbeckLet's talk about When Blood Calls. Can you please give us a one sentence blurb?
Sure!

Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney Sara Constantine’s orderly world is rocked when she’s hand-picked to prosecute “special” cases for the mysterious Division 6...but when she steps into the interrogation room with her new boss to question a murder suspect, the earth shifts beneath her feet again, because not only is the man across the table the very man with whom she’d recently had a passionate one night stand, he also happens to be a vampire.

(Okay, that really should have been 3 sentences, but I did manage to do it!)

Which of the characters in When Blood Calls are you most like? The most different?
I'd have to say I'm most like Sara. I don't necessarily see the world in the strict black and white that she does, but I'd like to think that I have her ability to roll with the punches, and adapt when the world goes to pieces around you!

Most different? That would have to be Luke. I'm not a vampire (really!), I'm not alpha, and although vigilante justice might work out fine in fiction, in real life... well, no.

Would you switch places with the main character of When Blood Calls if you had the chance?
Not in a million. I'm totally happy with my life, my husband and my kids!

What three songs would be included in the When Blood Calls soundtrack?
ACK! This one I can't do. I love music, I listen to music, but I don't know music, except for Broadway musicals, and even there I'm behind the times. But I suppose if forced, it would be a score by John Williams or Andrew Lloyd Webber.

What's next after When Blood Calls?
Lots more Shadow Keepers books!! Books two and three come back to back, with WHEN PLEASURE RULES in October, and WHEN WICKED CRAVES in November. And I'm thrilled to say that Bantam has already bought the next three books in the series, WHEN PASSION LIES, WHEN TEMPTATION RULES, and WHEN DANGER HUNGERS. So I'm busily writing those. No release date, but stay tuned! All three feature characters you meet in the first three books.
jkbeck

WOW! Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear there will be more than three Shadow Keepers books (**big grin**). Do you have a question you'd like to ask the readers?
The Shadow Keepers books are filled with all sorts of paranormal characters, but the three prominent are vampires, werewolves, and para-daemons. And in the world, there's an ancient vamp/weren feud still bubbling under the surface. So as you read PNR, what are you? Team Fang? Or Team Fur? And why?

Thank you so much for stopping by J.K. and answering my questions! Everyone, you can visit JK's blog at www.jkbeck.com and learn more about the Shadow Keepers series at www.theshadowkeepers.com. 1. I would live in Harry Potter's world in a heartbeat. Post-Voldemort please! Dementors give me the heebie-jeebies!

I have to say I like the werewolves but if a series actually had a vamp that could turn into a bat I would totally change my mind! I do like the vamps for eye-candy (mind-candy?) but if I had to be one I'd want to be warm and fuzzy over cold and dead.

  2. I've always been a fan of the weres. They seem so much sexier than vamps to me. Sure, vamps are immortal, strong, and incredibly good looking (most of the time!), but who wants to fall in love with someone that only comes out at night?
Give me a studly, eathy, masculine furball who guarantees to give me a little "me time" once a month.

  3. I am Team Fang. I have found that no matter the book or series, when it comes down to it, Team Fang always wins in my eyes. I don't know why, but the vampires just appeal to me more. While some books might make the Werewolves seem more appealing, I still end up preferring the Vampires.

  4. I like both vamps and werewolves, but when it comes time to choose, I'm Team Fang all the way. The Shadow Keepers series sounds wonderful and I'm really eager to get started with it. That "one sentence" description really did it for me for When Blood Calls, all I can say is wow.

  5. Cool answers, guys! As for coming out only at night, I've been watching The Vampire Diaries (on about episode 5, so no spoilers, please!). But if I was a vamp, I'd totally want to get me one of those rings!

  6. Great interview!

    ~~

    Question for JK.

Any chance of a Kate Connor/Division 6 universe cross over series?

Would be interesting to see how that would turn out (eg.. How would Kate handle a recruitment offer? Does the Vatican have an existing long standing relationship with the Shadow society?)

  7. What a really great interview. This book sounds really good. So glad to hear there will be more follow up books. I so have a new series on my to be read pile.

I am so Team Fang. I have loved vampires all my life and even though I do enjoy reading about Werewolves I will always be a die hard Vampire fan. There is just something about a broody, mysterious man with a tortured soul. Which I find most Vampires to be in some fashion. I also love all the different takes on Vampires that different authors come up with. That keeps Vampires fresh for me and not over done.

  8. You know, today I am feeling Team Fur. Just because that would be amazing to see a personal go from human to wolf, and if I turned Fur at least I could still have coffee, chocolate, and desserts ;) SO yeah I am turning for the Fur. These books look amazing! I am so excited to see them.

  10. I'd also love to live in Harry Potter's world, but as a magician....and maybe it would be better if it was post-voldemort!

I was team Fang for a while, but now I'm Team Fur. I just love wolves!!

Congrats on your books deal! I can't wait to read your series ;)

Anything is possible given a liberal application of alcohol.

Just ask the Ghost of Hunter S.T. for pointers, I am sure he is still hanging about someplace... The result itself may still be questionable though, again, ask Hunter :)

  12. Depends on the book and which character is my favourite. Wolf or vampire? Sometimes it's both.

I would love to read this book, it sounds really good.

  14. Wonderful interview and the series sounds like a fabulous read! I'm team fang because I was first introduced to PNR by them and still love their mystique and fangs.

  15. I read tons of paranormal romances, but if I had to pick one, it would be fur. Something about the animal characteristic blended with human wants and needs is just fascinating, and most times wildly imaginative.

  16. Hi, J.K., have always loved your books! I'm split between the 2 clubs. Club fangs drawback is the sunlight issue. Did you forget Spike had a Daylight/no harm to Spike ring for an episode, before Vampire Diaries? Club Fur kind of grosses me out with the raw meat, muscles twitching, blood pumping issue. Otherwise I'm all into Club Fang & Club Fur.

Anyhow, looking forward to series. Hope I win!

    Take care,
    Jill M.

  17. Oh, man, who hasn't been waiting for a letter from Hogwarts since their first Harry Potter experience? That's pretty high up on my 'worlds I'd like to experience' list, as well.

As to the question, I think it can vary on a book-to-book basis (some vamps and weres are cooler than others), but overall, I think I'm still a Fanger. Vamps are what got me into PNR, and they'll always have a soft spot in my heart.

    Looks like an interesting series!

  18. Lol yea Kayla + Cyna i'm convinced my letter is going to come any day now!!

But that aside, I'm definitely Team Fang! They are mysterious, powerful, dangerous and always a good read!

    Great Q&A by the way!

  21. Hmm now that's a tough question! I think I would pick vampires because of the allure that they hold. They are normally gorgeous (I sound so shallow), have heightened senses, immense strength and power. Although being with a dead guy could be kind of gross but I would still pcik vamps over weres.

  25. I was Team Fang for years but just within this past year I've found myself leaning heavily towards Team Demon instead.

Demons are just so sexy and the writer has so many options with them. They aren't dependent on blood for survival so you don't have to share them with anyone and unlike lycans there are no issues with beastiality.

There are almost no rules when writing demons, unlike vamps & weres, so the writer can be really free with the characters. They can have all kinds of cool powers and abilities with no preconceived restrictions.

  26. I'm a little of both. Vamps are usually better looking but with weres you don't have to worrry about getting your blood sucked out!

  34. Well..even though I love furry creatures, I'm usually Team Fang...but the impressive thing is, I only had to make this choice once in my life with Twilight, with every other paranormal stuff I've read, there's either a vampire (like McKinley's Sunshine...I love Constantine :D) or a were (like Stiefvater's Shiver series), but never the two of them competing. So I'm really just a classic Team Edward + Anti-Jacob.

  35. Team Fur! As much as I like vampires, I am not too enthusiastic about the fang thing. I get goosebumps and mad heart acceleration (not in a good way) whenever I think of needles. Thick, gleaming, razor sharp fangs sliding into my bloodstream? Um, no thanks. On the other hand, I get no problems with wolves whatsoever. To say the truth, I think they're pretty cute. :)

Thanks so much for making this international and you can reach me at luvpinkpanther@gmail.com

  36. 100% Team Fur !!

Why ? C'om ! Living without eating chocolate cake ? Or crèpes ? Impossible !
Plus I think that Werewolves have more "human" inside. Vamps are juste plain dead, like advanced zombies.

  40. Great interview...these blogs are so bad for my budget.
It all depends on the story and how the characters are portrayed. My initial leaning is team fang but I've been known to go for fur....

  41. Thanks for the great post and for making the giveaway international!!

    I'm definitely team fur!! Why?

    Because:

    - it is so nice to cuddle up to a warm body
    - wolves are possessive and protective
    - they eat normal food not just blood
    - you can walk with them out in broad daylight
    - they don't have an urge to suck you dry
    - they are MONOGAMOUS! They would lay down their life for their mate
    - wolves are playful and affectionate, they love PDA
    - small wolf pups are cute! :-D lol

Thanks again, your new series sounds exciting! :-D

  42. Team Fang!!!! for now... And why?
Simple, the first thing I always think of would be: The vamps then probably passed their mid-life crisis waaaaay back when :-P
But honestly, for different books either side would be appealing. Like in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, the vamps are less than proper fuctioning anythings while there is Curran.
But then this awesome book makes me re-think everything :)
Sounds too great, and I have my fingers crossed!

  44. Team Fur. First of all, they're alive (that gives them a lot of points in my book), I also like how they are structured (packs, prides, etc.) and well, I guess I just like that they can turn into some kind of animal.
