Hi J.K.! Please tell us a little about yourself?
J.K. Beck is a deeply mysterious author with a detailed knowledge of all things weird, otherworldly, dark and dangerous. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! (Okay, maybe I'm not sticking so tight. J.K. Beck is a pen name for moi, Julie Kenner, author of a whole buncha books including the urban fantasy demon-hunting soccer mom series--maybe that's SUBurban fantasy?-and the recent Blood Lily Chronicles. And a lot of other books, too, from romance to chicklit!
I've always wanted to write, got there via the strange route of film school to law school to lawyer to writer. But, hey, it worked for me! Now I write full time, live in Central Texas with my husband, two daughters, two cats, and two fish. I homeschool my kids, and am SO excited because we're moving to a brand spanking new house really soon and I'll have more room... which I will NOT fill up with clutter. Really. Really.
LOL, I'm sure you're not a hoarder type. Your top 3 paranormal character crushes from any book or TV or movies?
OMG, number one's easy! Spike. 'Nuff said.
After that, it's harder, but I'll stick Angel on the list, too, but the Angel from ANGEL, who had a bit more personality, imho. And, just b/c I'm feeling contrary, I'm going to go with J.D. Robb's Roarke as the third. (Seriously, he's too perfect. He MUST be paranormal!)
If you could spend a week living in a book and interacting with the characters, what book would you choose? Why?
This one, not so easy--there are just too many to choose from!
Ummm. Harry Potter (do I really have to pick a book?), but only if I don't have to be a Muggle while I'm there, because I think being in that magical world would just be...well...wow. Otherwise, I just don't know. There are too many awesome possibilities. Outlander, maybe, because I think that it would be amazing to see Scotland back then, and Jamie and Claire are such great characters. But I'd need assurance I was only staying a week! I'm definitely a modern kinda girl!
Harry Potter... you are a woman after my own heart! Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Both. I wing it while the idea is percolating (a short "getting the idea" process) and then I almost always write a synopsis. I don't always stick to the synopsis, though. In some books, I stick like glue, referring back constantly. In others, I just dive in and go and I might look at the synop if I hit a hard spot, but more likely I'll call on one of my critique partners to talk it through! I guess the bottom line is that every book is different and organic.
Let's talk about When Blood Calls. Can you please give us a one sentence blurb?
Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney Sara Constantine’s orderly world is rocked when she’s hand-picked to prosecute “special” cases for the mysterious Division 6...but when she steps into the interrogation room with her new boss to question a murder suspect, the earth shifts beneath her feet again, because not only is the man across the table the very man with whom she’d recently had a passionate one night stand, he also happens to be a vampire.
(Okay, that really should have been 3 sentences, but I did manage to do it!)
Which of the characters in When Blood Calls are you most like? The most different?
I'd have to say I'm most like Sara. I don't necessarily see the world in the strict black and white that she does, but I'd like to think that I have her ability to roll with the punches, and adapt when the world goes to pieces around you!
Most different? That would have to be Luke. I'm not a vampire (really!), I'm not alpha, and although vigilante justice might work out fine in fiction, in real life... well, no.
Would you switch places with the main character of When Blood Calls if you had the chance?
Not in a million. I'm totally happy with my life, my husband and my kids!
What three songs would be included in the When Blood Calls soundtrack?
ACK! This one I can't do. I love music, I listen to music, but I don't know music, except for Broadway musicals, and even there I'm behind the times. But I suppose if forced, it would be a score by John Williams or Andrew Lloyd Webber.
What's next after When Blood Calls?
Lots more Shadow Keepers books!! Books two and three come back to back, with WHEN PLEASURE RULES in October, and WHEN WICKED CRAVES in November. And I'm thrilled to say that Bantam has already bought the next three books in the series, WHEN PASSION LIES, WHEN TEMPTATION RULES, and WHEN DANGER HUNGERS. So I'm busily writing those. No release date, but stay tuned! All three feature characters you meet in the first three books.
WOW! Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear there will be more than three Shadow Keepers books (**big grin**). Do you have a question you'd like to ask the readers?
The Shadow Keepers books are filled with all sorts of paranormal characters, but the three prominent are vampires, werewolves, and para-daemons. And in the world, there's an ancient vamp/weren feud still bubbling under the surface. So as you read PNR, what are you? Team Fang? Or Team Fur? And why?
