About Us & Our Blog

The sisters behind the blog, Leslie and Michelle.

Michelle:
I'm 24 years old and I live in Hawaii. I graduated with a degree in elementary education in 2009. I taught second grade for a year but decided to go back to school full-time. I am currently pursuing my masters in library science. My favorite books to read are young adult fiction and contemporary and historical romances. I'm also a big Modern Family fan.
Leslie:
My name is Leslie and I'm 14 years old. I'm a sophomore in high school and in the marching band. My favorite genre to read is young adults, especially those with paranormal and fantasy elements. I officially started blogging when I reviewed my first book on Halloween in 2009 here on the blog. I love to watch shows on the Disney Channel.

Why is the url "booksandmakeup"?I [Michelle] started blogging on September 2009. I just graduated college that May and was job hunting with very little luck. I began my blog to keep my mind off the fact that none of the places that I interviewed at were calling. That was also around the time I discovered how-to makeup videos on YouTube. I started blogging with an intention to review beauty products and books, hence our url is "booksandmakeup." But reviewing beauty products wasn't as fun as reviewing books, so the whole makeup idea was dropped. Then, a month later I got my then 13-year-old sister Leslie to review a young adult book she was reading because I wasn't reading as much (I found a job!). I somehow talked Leslie into becoming my official blog partner and that's how we became Michelle and Leslie's Book Picks.

What can you expect on Michelle and Leslie's Book Picks?

Book Reviews

The reviews will be written by me, Michelle, or my sister Leslie. Most of the books I will be reviewing will be romance books from all sub-genres. I will also be reviewing some YA books on occasion. All the books Leslie will be reviewing are YA books. Most of the books reviewed on this blog are either bought by me or Leslie, borrowed from our local public library or won from giveaways (see "source of my copy" on each of our review).

Books We Covet
It will feature books we are very excited about reading and plan on buying/borrowing in the near future. It is similar to the "Waiting On" meme hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine but some of the books may already be published. We will include the books' blurb, cover art, and/or release date if they're available.

Midnight Confessions
It is a journal/discussion/rant type of blog post series we are going to do every other Thursday. It will be all about our bookish confessions, observations, rants and thoughts.

For Your Weekly Book Video and Cover Fix
Features book videos and covers we came across and loved (or disliked as the case may be) and just had to share with the rest of our reader friends. We'll also include our thoughts about the trailer(s).

FYI
Info from around the blogosphere that we think you might find interesting--be it giveaways, events, awesome blogs, etc.

Other posts will include:
Giveaways
Challenge Updates
Memes

  7. Wow you remind me a lot of myself! I'm 22, graduated with my bachelor degree in 2009. I love to read, but never really had time because of school. I was job hunting for months and had all this unfamiliar free time so I started reading... a lot! haha anyways, I have a 16 year old sister who also loves to read. I tried to persuade her into writing reviews with me, but she hasn't agreed yet.

I also found a job last year so I don't have as much time to read anymore. Sorry to ramble so much. Love your blog and I'm so jealous that you live in Hawaii!! :P
